What Are the Types And Uses of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC)?

(Summary description)Quick-soluble products, cold water quickly dispersed, disappearing in the water, the liquid does not have viscosity. Because HPMC is only dispersed in water, not really dissolved.

Quick-soluble products, cold water quickly dispersed, disappearing in the water, the liquid does not have viscosity. Because HPMC is only dispersed in water, not really dissolved. About 2 minutes later, the viscosity of the liquid slowly becomes larger and forms a transparent viscous gel.

The hot-soluble product, when it meets cold water, can be dispersed rapidly in hot water and disappear in the hot water. When the temperature drops to a certain temperature, the viscosity slowly appears until it forms a transparent viscous gel. Hot soluble type can only be used in putty powder and mortar, in liquid glue and paint, it will appear clumping phenomenon and cannot be used. The fast-soluble type has a wide range of application and can be used in putty powder and mortar, as well as in liquid glue and paint, without any contraindications.

What is the difference between cold water instant type and hot soluble type of HPMC in the production process?

HPMC cold water fast soluble type is treated with glyoxal surface treatment, it is rapidly dispersed in cold water, but not really dissolved, the viscosity comes up, then it is dissolved. The hot soluble type is not surface treated with glyoxal. If the amount of glyoxal is large, it will be dispersed quickly, but the viscosity will come up slowly, if the amount is small, it will be the opposite.

Hot water dissolution method of HPMC

Since HPMC does not dissolve in hot water, HPMC can be evenly dispersed in hot water at the initial stage, and then quickly dissolved when it cools down. Two typical methods are described as follows.

Method 1. Put the required amount of hot water in the container and heat it to about 70°C. Gradually add hydroxypropyl methylcellulose with slow stirring. At first HPMC floats on the surface of the water, then gradually forms a slurry, and cools the slurry under stirring.

Method 2. Add 1/3 or 2/3 of the required amount of water to the vessel and heat to 70°C. The hot water slurry was prepared by dispersing HPMC as in 1; then the remaining amount of cold water was added to the hot water slurry and the mixture was cooled after stirring.Powder mixing method of HPMC

Mix HPMC powder with a large amount of other powdery substances, mix thoroughly with a mixer, and then add water to dissolve, then HPMC can be dissolved without agglomeration. Because each tiny corner, only a little HPMC powder will dissolve immediately when it meets water.

This is exactly the method used by putty powder and mortar manufacturers. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) is used as a thickening agent and water retention agent in putty powder mortar.
